The full and formal title of the play is “The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum at Charenton, Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade.” Set in an insane asylum in France during the reign of Napoleon, “Marat/Sade” is grounded historically in the theatrical productions staged in the asylum by the Marquis de Sade using the inmates as actors. It is a “play within a play,” as the audience joins the asylum director Coulmier as his “guests” at de Sade’s production, a re-enactment of the events leading up to the murder of French Revolutionary hero Jean-Paul Marat. Coulmier wants the play to be a patriotic display in support of the new regime, but de Sade and the inmates have ideas of their own…
