Separated by more than 6,000 miles, Istanbul-based artist Gabrielle Reeves and Wyoming-based artist Maria Rose Wimmer unite in their first joint exhibition, “Elemental Portraits,” a collaboration which explores the artists’ common interest in portraiture.

Building upon this age-old artistic tradition, Maria and Gabrielle have linked their work within the theme of the elements: earth, air, fire, water and aether. Through their individual practices, the artists envision how an individual might embody a given element.

Gabrielle Reeves’s work is rooted in reality and explores reciprocal interactions between herself and her surroundings. Reeves’s studio work and on-location drawing often incorporate people and architecture from her current home in Turkey. For this series, she combines found objects, patterns and subtle symbolism with her subject matters in order to depict the shifting and the often obscure nature of personality.

Juxtaposed to the reality-based work of Reeves, Maria Rose has carefully matched the elements with the personalities of her subjects in an often dream-like world. Her characters make direct eye contact with the viewer, inviting them to investigate a private reality which can only exist between subject, artist, and audience. Elemental Portraits has grown out of a mutual love for drawing, portraiture and collaboration. This body of work explores personal identity, its fluidity, and how environment affects personality.

Conjointly the works create a conversation between artists about the world and how others can be viewed in context to their environment — and just what one might consider an individual’s environment to be.
